Basketball was invented by gym teacher and sports coach James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1891. Naismith designed the game to keep his students active indoors during cold winters.
When the sport was first invented, peach baskets served as basketball hoops. This meant that the ball had to be retrieved manually after each “basket” was scored until Naismith decided to cut the bottoms out of the baskets.
Basketball initially used leather soccer balls with inflatable pig bladders and laces, which led to unpredictable bounces. Later, lace-free balls improved consistency in games.
The original basketball balls were brown. In the 1950s, Tony Hinkle, a former basketball player and coach, introduced an orange ball to make it more visible to players and spectators.
In the early days of basketball, players wore one of three types of uniforms: knee-length football trousers, wrestler-style jersey tights, or short padded pants, all of which were worn with knee guards.
Dribbling was not initially a part of basketball rules. Instead, players had to “bounce pass” the ball to move up the court.

In contrast, American Muggsy Bogues, who played between 1987 and 2001, is the shortest basketball player in NBA history at 5 feet 3 inches (1.6 meters).
Poland-born Margo Dydek, at 7 feet 2 inches (2.1 meters), is the tallest basketball player in WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) history.
