His full name is Néstor Gastón Carbonell. Carbonell was born on December 1, 1967, in New York City.

Although Carbonell was born in the US, he is of Cuban decent. His father Néstor Tulio Carbonell Cortina and mother Rosa Ramírez de Arellano Cárdenas are both from Cuba.

Nestor Carbonell studied alongside Matthew Fox at high school, who he later worked with in the television series Lost

Carbonell attended Harvard University and graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts in English.

In 1990 at the Apple Corps Theatre, New York, Carbonell was cast for the role of Cpl. Joe Santana in the show A Silent Thunder.

In 1995 he appeared in the stage performance of Getting Away with Murder which showed at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego.

His debut acting role on television screens was in 1989 in an episode of As the World Turns, playing the character of Alberto Cordova.

After his debut, Carbonell appeared in the episode: “Out of Control” of Law & Order in 1991. This was when his career started to take off.

From 1996 to 2000, he played the recurring role of Luis Rivera for four seasons of the sitcom Suddenly Susan. He appeared in a total of 93 episodes.

For two years in a row Carbonell won an award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series at the ALMA Awards in 1998 and 1999.

In 2000 Carbonell made his screenwriting and producing debut with the comedy film Attention Shoppers, while also playing the lead role of Enrique Suarez.

In 2001 Carbonell married Shannon Kenny, an Australian actress. They met while co-starring in the television series Muscle.

Carbonell’s first son, Rafael, was born in 2002. He had a second son with Kenny in 2005, who they named Marco.

In 2003 Carbonell was awarded Star on the Horizon from Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival.

Carbonell played the character of Richard Alpert from 2007-2010 in the television series Lost. He appeared in a total of 29 episodes.

Originally Carbonell was only cast for season three of Lost, as he had committed to another acting role for a CBS series called Cane.

The series Cane was canceled due to strikes from 2007-2008 from the Writers Guild of America. This then freed up Carbonell so he could be in another season of Lost.

Carbonell played the role of Mayor Anthony Garcia in both The Dark Night, 2008 and The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.

Over the years 2015-2017, Carbonell was credited for being a director of three episodes of Bates Motel.

Carbonell also played the role of Sheriff Alex Romero in Bates Motel in 45 episodes from 2013-2017.

As well as acting, Carbonell has a talent for voice acting too. He has voiced characters on many animated television series such as Kim Possible, Justice League Unlimited, and Big Hero 6: The Series.

Carbonell is a practicing Roman Catholic.

His height is 5 foot 10 inches (177 cm).
